He started his career in minor roles on and off- The Penny Wars (1969), followed by The Trial of the Catonsville Nine [4] Woods' early film roles include in (1975).

James is of Irish, English, and German descent. He grew up in Warwick, Rhode Island, with his mother and stepfather Thomas E. Dixon.
